Why should a guy want to be at the forefront of this trend? Consider for yourself, It’s about the individual. Possible Reason # 4. Looks better than common blue jeans and tee shirt and is more interesting that typical American men’s clothing. The semi-formal use of the Kilt is more relaxed. The shirt and tie will be the normal of European business suit style. Ties are available in popular Tartan plaids but it is generally not considered good taste to use them with the Plaid Kilt. Also: the Prince Charlie Jacket is a bit much and an Argyle style is still pretty dressy for evening or day wear style jacket would be more appropriate. Likewise the formal sporran is not required and day to evening styles with a fold over flap would be more appropriate. Normal black dress shoes can be substituted for the Ghillies. The hose and flashes will be the same though special uniform items will be dispensed with. The fly-plaid, will be dispensed with. The Kilt itself may be of lighter wool and the Tartan may change from that defined as dress to a hunting or ancient version. Semi-formal must lose some of the formal features to keep from being over dressed. All optional but again, the extra heavy military weight fabric will be oppresively hot and heavy for enjoying temperate climates. The weight, expense and dry cleaning care are why you don’t see the dress Kilt used on a everyday basis. These days, there’s not much need even to dress up this much except where Scots gather. Often, just as with a Tuxedo, the dress outfit is hired. There is a more relaxed style with more free and individual expression for those who want to get the Kilt out of the closet at other than the rare required dress occasions. We’ll call this day-to-evening wear and there is even the casual Kilt with less material and fewer pleats but still a Tartan plaid for those who want a Kilt to use this way.
