The dress Kilt is worn formally with necessary accessories. This is the Scottish equivalent of a Tuxedo in English dress and is used at the same functions such as formal black tie ceremonies and weddings. It must have the proper wide uniform belt. The sporran, which is a man purse because the Kilt has no pockets, must also be of a formal design with the metal cantle. It will be fur covered and have tassels or pendants on chain. It belts on but not through the belt loops. The shirt and tie will be the same as would be worn with a Tuxedo. The tall socks or hose as they are referred to, will be natural off white, ecru or black but not colored for formal. Flashes, which are really garters to hold the wool up, will be worn on the outside of the leg to coordinate with the Tartan colors and the hose will be folded to a height of three fingers below the knee. The essential formal shoe is the Ghillie Brogue which is like a wing-tip except for the lacing area is open similar to an Irish dancing shoe. It is tied with a thin cord with tassel ends. The cord is twisted in front of the ankle, brought behind the leg and crossed back to the front and tied in a standard bow below the flashes. Finally, the requisite formal coat is the Prince Charlie style with waist coat (vest). Jewelry is a pin worn in the outer apron of the Kilt near the opening. A fly plaid may also be used which is a length of the Tartan matching the Kilt pinned over the shoulder with a brooch pin. Appropriate headwear is a special variety also using a hat pin. Jewelry will be either generally Celtic in design or represent one’s clan name. It’s all quite a procedure to don. Specific dress accouterments might be determined by military order or band uniform. Did I forget something? Never mind. Walk proudly and enjoy.
