Casual style is the popular mode for most people these days and it’s no different for the Kilt. No occasion is need to wear the Kilt casually. In fact, it’s become something of a fashion wave fueled by the growing number of manufacturers of casual Kilt designs. Of course a Tartan plaid casual kilt is still the recognizably more dressy option along with some of the creations of 21st Century Kilts. But, the range of fabrics covers the whole gamut including the incessantly popular blue denim. Accessories will depend on whether you feel the need to dress in keeping with Celtic style or want to go for American trendy.
About the only accessory needed is the wide belt; all kilts are made for exceptionally wide belts and are worn higher on the waist. The class of utility kilts even have ample pockets making the traditional sporran unnecessary. A casual sporran still helps with the Celtic style. But, any shirt will do; A polo or rugby shirt looks smart with a solid kilt. A Jacobite (or jacobean) lace collar shirt keeps the highland flavor. A kilt pin is fancy but can be impractical depending on the activity. The hose can be colors. Socks without flashes can be scrunched down over boots for the trendy look. Any casual shoe will do and professional soccer socks make a less expensive but smart casual substitute for the tradditional wool as they can stay up without flashes.

The great fad about the utility kilt is that it’s of comfortable and rugged fabric, wash-and-wear, the pleats are sewn in and they have pockets. They are very easy to put on and relatively inexpensive. They add another style class being the parallel to Amerian kakis and jeans only they are unbifurcated and thus better accommodate the male anatomy.
This is the style use of the Kilt that you will see at the Scottish Games, Celtic Festivals, Renaissance Fairs, and in the pubs with sport shoes. It makes a great hiking outfit.
