The Day-To-Evening style is still dressy but not formal. It’s about the equivalent of the sport coat or blazer which is a much more versatile style and not in much danger of being over dressed in town. The latitude is greater and kind of like business casual or spiffy casual. The jacket can be any waist coat or short jacket, the collar can be open, The belt is always a wide kilt belt; That just makes the Kilt. The sporran should NOT have a cantle, and may be a casual style. The hose can be a color to coordiate. The flashes will still be needed to keep wool socks in place but they too can have more color. The shoes will not be Ghillies but some nice dress shoe. Black is not necessary. Suddenly, with choice of colors and styles of accessories, there is a lot more room for individual expression and enhancing the color out of the Tartan which you chose. How you accessorize it, can totally change the look of the fabric. The kilt itself can be a lighter weight, other than the dress Tartan even a Tartan of preference rather than any clan uniform and it may be a “casual kilt” meaning that it will not be heavy material and will have fewer, about half as many, pleats. At this level of dress, it is no longer strictly the traditional dress of Scotland neither is it costume. It’s just Celtic garb and could just as easily represent Ireland, Wales, Isle of Man, Great Britan, or the ancient Celtic lands. There are national, county, regional as well as the family Tartans for these lands. The Kilt pin and the Sgain Dubh in the sock are still nice touches in keeping with Celtic style. It’s easier to don in the casual dress mode but it still is quite a standout eliciting questions. This can be an unfortunate reason not to wear the Kilt this way as it can be quite distracting; Conversely, it can be quite fun.
