Lorton is rich in original art and performance history. Lorton is home of world famous artists and entertainment greats. We expect the art studios, galleries and performance venues to grow as well. Right now, the historic town of Occoquan is home to several galleries showing original local fine art. Theatrical venues are also numerous which are previewed and reviewed in Lorton Valley Star. The area boasts schools of dance, acting, and music. Hearts in Motion in Saratoga Center teaches all three. There are no movie theaters in the center of Lorton and perriferal theaters have closed over the last ten years as home theaters are becoming a popular home improvement. MovieCo of Florida wanted to put a multi-cinema in Lorton Station and the Banks wouldn't even fund it.
Fairfax County has approved the proposal by the Lorton Arts Foundation to renovate the Occoquan Facility of the closed District of Columbia Correctional Facility as an art center with studios, gallery and museum as well as theatrical and music performance venue. On, the other side of Lorton, plans to refurbish the Old Country Store include a small strictly local art gallery. Bluegrass music is making a comeback from the days when this was the middle of a country music hotbed. The Old Country Store and the Mason Neck Lions Club have begun hosting country music concerts. Many country music greats have performed at the Hillbilly Heaven, now gone, and the Lorton Firehouse dances. Patsy Cline performed at the firehouse on New Year's Eve 1957.
